Intro

So what does Hosting mean?

In lamest terms; hosting is an online space that is rented to “host/store” the content of your website, blog or online store.

Hosting Types

Website Hosting: Is the “landlord” of your online “space” aka website, blog or online store. Anyone searching for your Domain Name (Website address) will be able to find you.  Your website is hosted on a computer, called a server. More on servers, later in this post.

Email Hosting: This is your email address, chosen to best suit your business or personal needs. Which will also be hosted on a server, dedicated to emails. Tweaked to prevent spammers and various possible email related hiccups like, full mailboxes, spam, and emails that do not send or receive etc.

Server Options

What are the best web hosting options available?
  • Shared Hosting: Shared Hosting is a good option to start with if you have a blog or small to medium business. It’s the most affordable hosting option available, the reason for that is, that you share server space with other websites. It comes with a lot of security and reliability features.
  • Dedicated Hosting: Dedicated is way more advanced as this type of hosting gives you complete/administrative control of your own server, with full root access and is ideal for much bigger businesses that have someone qualified to running this server and implementing checks and security measures regularly,
  • VPS hosting: You can think of VPS hosting as a higher, stronger and even more advanced form of shared hosting. VPS stands for a Virtual Private Server. You still share a server, but will have your own dedicated space. If you cannot afford a dedicated server, VPS is the way to go.

Summary

A server is a computer that stores and displays your content for the world to see.

Does my website have to hosted? Yes. Everything has to live somewhere. All of the stuff that you see on the internet is coming from a physical location somewhere in the world.

A Word Of Caution

Servers have backup systems in place that are designed to handle large amounts of traffic, and are configured to block attacks, information leaks, and alike. SO be sure you are hosting with a company that has great service and know what they are doing.

Unfortunately this is not to say that things can’t still go wrong with servers and websites, hackers are working hard to find new ways to compromise secure systems, but luckily for us most of the times there are tell-tale signs of infiltration if you know where to look.
